it was announced the faa would review the airplane, but the authorities stress their belief in its safety. are these just bumps to the road or part of a big problem? joining me earlier, i spoke with paul, who is an expert in aviation. thank you very much for coming in. there is a mixed message from the u.s. regulators. they say the airplane is safe, but they are reviewing its safety. what do you make of that? >> i think the faa wants to assure the public this airplane has met the standards. they're putting together a team to look at it. none of these events look connected. any new aircraft faces these kinds of problems often. when the 777 was introduced, it had problems. it has flown 17 years without a fatality. the 1-380 had cracks in its wings, a very serious on contained engine failure. it is starting to look like a great airplane. new complex structures have problems. >> how we know these are beginning problems and not part of a bigger problem? >> we have to trust the system, and the united states has a very good track record in the introduction of airplanes. i looked it up tod

scrutiny from the faa. phil lebeau joins us this morning from washington. >> the faa announcing in about 15 minutes a special safety review of the 787 dreamliner. we'll be hearing from secretary lahood, along with boeing executives in a bit. here's what the safety review, what it basically comes down to is this. they're going to be looking at the 787's electronics and specifically also looking at the lithium ion batteries. the manufacturing process also under review. an important point, though, the planes will stay in service. you talked about two incidents overnight in japan. these dreamliner incidents happened on an airway that involved a cracked windshield, another was an oil leak on a dreamliner. neither incident resulted in any problems for the crew or the passengers. we talked with the head of public relations for el nappon airways. the question is whether they'll stand by the 787. here's what they told us, we're confident of the safety of the dreamliner and have no plan to conduct any actions to the remaining 787s. if you take a look at shares of boeing, we've been in risk t

787 boeing dream liner. the faa will be holding a news conference to launch a major review of the boeing 787 boeing dream liner. this week there were numerous problems reported with the aircraft. one flight had to be canceled because of brake lines with the plane. on monday a dream liner operated by japan airlines had an electrical fire broke out in its battery. this has spark concerns and put a damper on the air sport here. >> i think the more convenient international flights we have here locally is great. i love that. i don't like to have to drive to sfo. so that is good for me. >> reporter: nan will be flying to tokyo five days a week. it's the first direct flight from san jose to asia in six years. it's also the first airport in the bay area to have this dream liner that has been touted as technologically advanced and fuel efficient. coming up later in the morning the media is supposed to be giving a tour of the aircraft. there will be several transportation officials as well as people from ana. we plan on asking them about the latest development. reporting live from san jose

major problems, the faa has ordered a complete review of boeing's brand-new 787 dreamliner passenger jet. a news conference is also planned for later this morning. meanwhile, cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is at the san jose international airport where one of those plans will land this morning. >> reporter: good morning. these new reports certainly marring the celebration here at san jose's airport. the flight is set to leave from san jose headed straight to tokyo. this is a big debut flight. it's supposed to leave at 5 minutes before noon today. it is still on schedule. this is the first boeing 787 dreamliner aircraft to fly from the bay area. this model has been flying for over a year. around 4 a.m. today, the faa ordered a comprehensive review of critical systems in that model. this is video from a few hours ago in japan where one of the planes developed a cracked windshield. another one had a fuel leak. no passengers were injured. no serious consequences. but obviously, concerns. there was also a separate fuel leak and a fire reported on one of the aircrafts earlier this week. cbs a

, this is af plane, feel confident if you are playing it. at the same time, the faa launched a special review looking at reliability and safety of the 787 dreamliner. it'll be run by the faa. but boeing will be assisting in that review and so will some of the suppliers, no doubt, as they look at electronics and use of lithium ion batteries on the dreamliner. remember a lithium ion battery was traced to be the source of the fire of the 787 that caught on fire while parked at a gate in boston on monday. in 2007 the faa made special rules for the use of lithium ion batteries on airplanes because of flammability can concerns. with all of that said, listen to what the head of the faa and secretary of transportation add to say when asked point blank, is it safe to fly the dreamliner. >> there's nothing that data has said that would suggest this airplane is not safe. >> i believe this plane is safe and i would have absolutely no reservation of boarding one of these planes and taking a flight. these planes are safe tp prs. >> another part of the review by the faa, looking at the manufa

announcement that came from the faa just a little earlier this morning. this is the 787's debut from mineta san jose airport and it is set to land in tokyo tomorrow morning. this is the first boeing 787 dreamliner aircraft tofully from the bay area. it's run by all nippon airways. the faa ordered a comprehensive review from critical systems in the 787 model after a fire and fuel leak this week. several flights had to be canceled. you're looking at video from boston' logan airport. the 787 dreamliner relies on electrical systems more than any other and uses rechargeable lithium ion batteries and uses lightweight materials. if it leaves today, it is scheduled to land tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. in tokyo. live in san jose, anne makovec, cbs 5. >>> a cold senate prompted freeze warnings in the bay area today. the warning is in effect for north bay valleys until 8 a.m. a frost advisory has been issued for the south bay. in livermore, people bundled up for unseasonable chilly temperatures. >> lots of layers and gloves. >> jacketed, two shirts and t- shirts. >> seems to be colder than last year.

the windshield of a 787 in flight during a flight over japan. this morning, the faa announcing it is opening an investigation into the aircraft. and how it is made. that announcement comes as silicon valley welcomes its first dreamliner to the san jose airport. >> it arrived after 9:00 a.m. and in less than an hour it will take a new flight of passengers bound for tokyo. in about 25 minutes. nbc bay area's bob riddell is live with more. >> reporter: good morning, marla and laura. there was a ceremony that just wrapped up with the mayor, with the ambassador, u.s. ambassador to japan and the airport's make namesake. at gate 15 to kick off the inaugural flight. all nippon airways flight 1075, the first nonstop flight between here and tokyo to leave in about 30 minutes, the five day-a-week schedule is significant for several reasons. one is the plane itself. the boeing 787 dreamliner, this is the first time the bay area will have regular service with this new state-of-the-art aircraft. when it landed here from tokyo, just around two hours ago, you could tell it was different. the wings s
